The workaround which (mostly) addresses this popping up intermittently is now live in 1.0.3. If it still pops up, it’ll also link to the F.A.Q. now.

I reviewed what's happening here, and a reliability fix (automated retries) wasn't enabled on macOS, just on iOS. Turns out I was too optimistic in having that iOS-only.
This is added in 1.0.3, coming shortly. On the iOS side that avoids this kind of error in 95% of cases. A proper fix will need Apple's attention. Fingers crossed.

That error 6 appears when the Apple Music black box fails to play for some reason.
It can mean that the device isn’t yet authorised to play DRM protected content in the Music app. It can help to nudge it by deauthorising it and then authorising it again through the Music app.
Another cause might be the Cloud Status of the songs in the Music app. If that says "Waiting", "Error", "Ineligible" or "Removed" then that also means it might refuse to play through third party apps. The only workaround there is to remove it from Apple Music, and re-add it if possible.

Adrian Schönig Thank you for coming back (and for Longplay itself which I've enjoyed since 2021). Most of my music is ripped and under an iTunesMatch subscription, or purchased on the iTunes Store. I've since found that it seems to be much more reliable if I right click on the album and then select play now.

Dom Mooney: Oh, right. If it's intermittent issues with playback of specific albums, then that's a known issue with the underlying Apple framework and it's one that's also been around on iOS for many years. It most occurs with the first album in a playback session, as its related to the framework authorising with Apple Music. (I've reported this to Apple and they are aware of it.)
Longplay does retry several times before surfacing that error. I'll tweak that retry limit and pauses between retries, in case it helps.
FWIW, right clicking and selecting "Play now" does exactly the same under the hood. Trying another album and then going back also seems to help. Though my guess is that why it works are the additional retries and waits between them.
What's unusual about your report is that you say you keep getting the issue. As far as I'm aware it should only be occurring infrequently.
When it happens next time, can you please share your latest log file with me? It's in "~/Library/Group Containers/7N3B54ALZK.app.longplay.Longplay/Logs". Please email that to words@longplay.app.

Dom Mooney One more note: If your music is ripped or otherwise DRM-free, and you have it downloaded to your Mac, then Longplay will play the music
directly
with a lower-level file-based player. That has none of these issues.D

Adrian Schönig Will do. Not had it since I wrote that last post. Thanks again for coming back to me.
